Tweak in Jupiter’s orbit could make Earth more habitable: Study

Earth is the only planet that is known to be quite livable to maintain living organisms. However, although it is a paradise for 8.7 million different forms of life, our planet can be made more livable. All that is needed is a little change in Jupiter’s orbit, stating a new study published in The Astronomical Journal. “If Jupiter’s position remains the same, but the shape of the orbit changes, it can really increase the feasibility of this planet’s habit,” said Planet Pam Vervoort scientist, one of the main scientists of this study.Scientists have long tried to measure precisely the factors that allow the earth to be in the perfect livable zone, where water can be easily there. The presence of this water is one of the key factors behind the earliest form of life that emerged from our primordial planet.

Now, this latest study shows that the effect of Jupiter itself on the earth’s climate should not be discounted from this equation. The mass of Jupiter, almost 2.5 times the other planets in the solar system are combined, allowing it to influence other planets even though 595.02 million km from our planet. The gas giant has long been considered as a reason why the earth has not been hit by comets and asteroids that are lost, with the gravitational force of the planet that shot them out of the solar system before they can affect the earth.

However, scientists suggest that any changes in Jupiter’s orbit can make the earth far more uninhabited than now, which can be the wrong assumption. “Many believe that the earth is a symbol of a decent planet and that every change in Jupiter’s orbit, becomes a big planet, can only be bad for the earth. We show that both assumptions are wrong,” explained Vervoort.

Scientists found that if Jupiter’s orbit around the sun was less circular and more orbitals, the earth’s own orbit would be more elliptical that produced parts of the planets that received more sunlight and heat. This will allow most of the earth to be in a medium and livable range. However, shortening the distance between the largest planet and the earth can have the opposite effect because Jupiter will then affect the axial slope of our planets that lead to harder and more extreme seasonal changes.
